Cards Dealt

Similar to other Indian rummy games, a standard deck of 52 cards is used for the game that includes one printed joker. Depending on the number of the players, one or two decks is used. Each player is dealt with 13 cards at the start of the game.

Objective

With the cards dealt, each player has to meld the 13 cards into valid sets and sequences by drawing and discarding the cards on their turn. To win a game at Pool Rummy, a player has to meld at least two sequences of which one of them should be a pure sequence. The objective of the game is to meld the cards and sustain in the game without scoring either 101 or 201 pool points depending what has pool point has been chosen.

Gameplay

Sets and Sequences

Rule 1: You have to meld minimum 2 sequences with one sequence being a pure sequence and the second sequence being an impure sequence. In online rummy, if you do not use jokers in melding a sequence, then such sequence is called a pure sequence.

Rule 2: You could meld the second sequence with or without the use of jokers.

Rule 3: You could meld the remaining cards into sets and sequences.

Drop Situation

Initial Drop: Drops are available in rummy online. In Pool rummy, if the cards dealt at the beginning are incompatible to form sets and sequences, then you could go for an initial drop which would fetch you very minimal points.

Middle Drop: In case the cards continue to be unfavorable to meld sequences and sets you could opt for a middle drop and the points penalized would be slightly more than the initial drop.

Points Calculation and the Winner

Pool rummy is a series of games where all the players are pushed to either 101 or 201 points limits. All the face cards carry 10 points and the remaining according to their values. The following simple formula is used to calculate the winning amount in Pool Rummy:

Losing Players’ Score

Here is the point calculation for losing players:

• If a player has created two sequences, including a pure sequence, only the points of the ungrouped cards will be added up.

• If a player declares without any sequence, the points of all the cards will be added up.

• If a player makes an invalid declaration, the penalty points will be 80.

• If a player misses three consecutive turns, they will be automatically dropped out of the game, with a penalty of 40 points in 101 Pool and 50 points in 201 Pool.

Maximum Score of a Player: In Pool Rummy, a player gets eliminated when they reach the maximum score limit of 101 points (in 101 pool) or 201 points (in 201 pool).

Legal Status

Rummy has been declared by the courts of law to be a game of skill. Hence, it is excluded from the applicability of laws prohibiting betting and gambling in all states to the exception of a few. However, the states of Assam and Orissa have not provided clear rulings and are thus ambiguous territories. Playing rummy online is also legal in India.
